Atlanta in 1864 was a railroad city, and its rail junctions made it one of the most valuable targets in the Confederacy. The city had grown quickly after the Western and Atlantic Railroad made it a terminus in the 1840s, and by the war years it handled supplies and troops moving between Virginia, Tennessee and the Deep South. Union forces under William T. Sherman laid siege to the city through the summer, and the Confederate army evacuated on September 1, after which the city's public buildings, depots and factories were destroyed in November before Sherman began his march to the sea. George N. Barnard, a photographer with Sherman's army, made this view in the months before that destruction.
