Atlanta in 1909 was a fast-growing railroad city of roughly 150,000 people, with more than a dozen lines converging on its downtown depots and a commercial base built on wholesaling, banking, cotton, and a growing number of factories. Georgia had gone dry at the start of 1908, and city leaders argued in the newspapers about saloons, schools, and how fast the town should expand. Vocational schools like the Atlanta School of Technology answered a practical demand: employers in the machine shops, rail yards, and new plants needed young men who could read drawings and run tools, not only clerks and lawyers. Its students, many of them from working families, would have seen the school as a route into skilled trades that paid steadily in a city where industrial jobs were multiplying.
