Savannah, Georgia, in 1909 was still one of the busiest seaports in the South, with its riverfront lined by wharves and warehouses handling cotton, naval stores such as turpentine and rosin, and lumber from the pine country inland. Steamships bound for Britain and Northern ports took on cotton bales, while rail lines carried crops and goods between the river and the interior. Cotton factors and merchant houses shaped the city's commercial life, and longshoremen and stevedores did the heavy lifting that kept cargo moving along the docks. For residents, the waterfront was the clearest measure of the city's prosperity and its place in the wider cotton economy.
