Savannah, Georgia, in 1909 was still living off the river and the sea. Cotton moved through its wharves on the Savannah River to European and Northern mills, and the naval stores trade in turpentine and rosin, along with sawmills and rail yards, kept its waterfront busy. Its cotton exchange on Bay Street was a center of commerce for the whole region. The city's streets and shaded squares, laid out in the 1730s by James Oglethorpe's plan, gave it a settled character that residents of the time took pride in, even as the port competed with growing cities farther north. The panorama captures a town that was prosperous and proud of its age, on the edge of the modern industrial South.
