Savannah, Georgia, in 1909 was one of the South's busiest cotton and naval stores ports, with ships loading cotton, turpentine, and rosin along the Savannah River waterfront. Lumber mills and railroad yards added to the city's commerce, and the cotton trade shaped much of its business life, from the brokers who met at the Cotton Exchange to the warehouses near the bluff. Savannah was also known for its shaded squares and oak-lined streets laid out in the 1700s, which residents valued as a civic point of pride even as the city grew beyond them. In this period, the city's economy and its street life were closely tied to the river, and visitors often remarked on the contrast between its orderly squares and the busy docks just a few blocks away.
