Savannah, Georgia, in 1909 was still one of the busiest cotton and naval-stores ports on the South Atlantic coast. Cotton bales moved down the Savannah River from upcountry Georgia and the Carolinas to wharves along the city's riverfront, where steamships carried them to British and Northern mills, while barrels of turpentine and rosin from the surrounding pine forests were shipped out in large volumes. The Central of Georgia and Atlantic Coast Line railroads linked the port to the interior, and the city's population had grown steadily since the Civil War. Residents of the day knew Savannah as much for its squares, live oaks, and Spanish moss as for its harbor trade, and the waterfront they saw in this view was the economic heart of the city.
