Savannah in 1909 was a busy cotton and naval stores port, with a population of roughly 60,000 and a riverfront lined with warehouses, wharves, and cotton bales waiting for ships bound for Northern and European mills. The Savannah River shipping trade shaped the city's economy, and the Central of Georgia Railway and other lines carried timber, turpentine, and rosin to the docks. Segregation under Jim Crow laws governed public life, and Black residents, who made up a large share of the city's population, worked most of the port's labor and built their own churches, schools, and benevolent societies. Squares and tree-lined streets, along with Forsyth Park, gave the city a genteel face that many residents took pride in.
