Savannah, Georgia, in 1909 was a river port of roughly 65,000 people whose economy rested on the Savannah River waterfront, where cotton, naval stores such as turpentine and rosin, and lumber were loaded onto ships bound for northern and European markets. Cotton merchants and shippers shaped commercial life downtown, and the wharves and warehouses along the water formed the city's economic center. Rail lines, including the Central of Georgia Railway, carried freight from the interior to the docks and tied the port to the farms and pine forests of the surrounding counties. Residents knew their city for its squares and shaded streets, laid out in the eighteenth century, which framed daily life well into the new century.
