Lookout Mountain rises above the Tennessee River near Chattanooga, and in 1864 its summit looked south over the valley that led into Georgia. Federal troops had taken Chattanooga in the fall of 1863 after the battles there and on the mountain, and the city became a major Union supply base. The Western and Atlantic Railroad ran from Chattanooga toward Atlanta, carrying men, horses, and provisions for Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman's campaign, which opened in May 1864. Soldiers and local residents alike watched the rail traffic and the distant Georgia hills, knowing that the war would be decided along that line. Atlanta fell in September 1864.
