In 1917 Georgia's cotton country still ran on tenant farming and sharecropping, with Black and white families working land owned by a comparatively small number of planters. Cotton was the state's main cash crop, and bales moved by rail to gins, warehouses and markets in Augusta, Macon and Savannah. The boll weevil had reached Georgia in the years just before, and growers were beginning to worry about falling yields. Prices were high when the United States entered the First World War that spring. Anyone who looked at a scene like this would have understood farming here as a single-crop economy whose fortunes rose and fell with the market and the weather.
