Macon, Georgia, in 1917 was a cotton and railroad town on the Ocmulgee River, with the Central of Georgia Railway's shops and rail lines shaping its economy. That spring, after the United States entered the First World War, the federal government chose the area for Camp Wheeler, a new training cantonment on the edge of the city named for Joseph Wheeler, the former Confederate cavalry officer who later served in the U.S. Army during the Spanish-American War. Through 1917, the camp grew rapidly as draftees and volunteers arrived, and local residents watched the sudden influx change streetcar traffic, boardinghouses, and shop trade. This view of "B Camp" records one section of that wartime construction, when the quiet farmland south of town was being turned into barracks and drill fields.
