Few hotels in Philadelphia were as new as the Bellevue-Stratford when this view was made, since it had opened on Broad Street only a year or so earlier, in 1904. The building was among the city's grandest hotels of its era, and the Detroit Publishing Company, which documented American towns and landmarks for travel sales, recorded it at about the time it was drawing well-heeled visitors. Two nearly identical 8 x 10 glass negatives of the view survive, a reminder that photographers often made several exposures of a subject to ensure one came out right. The set came to the Library of Congress as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
