The Pink Room at the Bellevue-Stratford, the Philadelphia hotel at Broad and Walnut Streets, gives this view its subject, and the hotel's 1904 opening suggests the scene dates from the early 1900s. William H. Rau, a Philadelphia photographer and printmaker active around the turn of the twentieth century, documented the city's buildings and institutions, and this photoprint belongs to that body of work. The catalog card records no date, so the exact year remains uncertain. Its decorative treatment of the room, which the card groups under hotels and interiors, is the main thing to look at.
