Steel plates being trimmed into round blanks at the Henry Disston & Sons plant in Philadelphia form the subject here, an early step in making circular saws. Disston began making saws in the city in 1840 and grew into one of the best-known saw manufacturers in the country. The photoprint was issued by the U.S. Army Quartermaster Corps sometime between 1918 and 1919, when the Army documented factories producing goods for the war effort. The date and caption details come from an unverified card, so treat them as provisional.
