El Chico, a Herreshoff fin-keel yacht, is the subject of this 1892 glass negative, dated June 14. Herreshoff yards in Bristol, Rhode Island, produced many fast racing sailboats in the 1890s, and fin keels, deep narrow blades in place of the older broad keels, were a design meant to improve performance under sail. The notes suggest the scene may be from a regatta of the Indian Harbor Yacht Club, though that link rests on the lettering and numbering on the negative rather than a firm caption. The plate came into the Detroit Publishing Company collection and reached the Library of Congress as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
