A racing yacht named *Gloriana* is the subject of this 8 x 10 inch glass negative, dated June 23, 1891. The record suggests it may show a race of the Atlantic Yacht Club, where sailing craft competed for prizes before crowds of spectators. Yacht racing was a fashionable pastime among wealthy owners on the East Coast in the 1890s. The plate carries the numbering of the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for its large output of American views, though this print lacks its catalog number. It came to the Library of Congress as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
