The title pairs a personal name, Keneu, with Montauk, and the cataloger added the bracketed second half, so it reflects a later reading rather than a caption from 1897. Montauk can refer to a place at the eastern tip of Long Island or to the Montaukett people who lived there, and the record does not say which applies. The negative is an 8 by 10 inch glass plate dated July 15, 1897, from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose large-format views recorded American landscapes, towns and people. The uncertain identification is itself worth noting for anyone researching the sitter or setting.
