This view captures the start of a race between the American sloop *Mayflower* and the British cutter *Galatea*, preserved on a glass negative dated September 7, 1886. The two yachts met that year in the America's Cup, the international yacht race whose trophy was then held by the United States, and the contest was staged in waters off New York. *Mayflower*, designed by Edward Burgess and owned by Gen. Charles J. Paine, won the series. A start is the most tense moment of a race, when skippers maneuver for the best position against the wind, so the plate records a point of real competition rather than a leisurely sail.
