A sailboat named *Thelma* sits in the foreground of this September 1899 view of a race start at Larchmont, New York, on Long Island Sound. The Larchmont Yacht Club hosted regattas there, and the picture shows the fleet gathered at the line as the race begins. It survives as an 8 by 10 inch glass dry plate negative, a format that recorded fine detail for large prints. The Detroit Publishing Company, known for its broad photographic survey of American scenery and life around 1900, is credited here, though that attribution rests on the style of the title and numbering rather than a confirmed record.
