The record gives only the name "Ethelwynn" and no place, so this negative's subject is known only by its title. Made around 1895 on an 8 by 10 inch glass dry plate, it is one of the large-format negatives that photographers of the period used for sharp, detailed work. The Detroit Publishing Company, founded in the 1890s and later known for its photochrom color prints of scenic and travel views, held the plate, and the Colorado State Historical Society gave it to the Library of Congress in 1949. Its survival in that collection makes it a useful record of how the company's photographers worked in the decade before the firm grew famous.
