Dated September 4, 1899, this glass negative is titled "Kenwood," the name of a vessel, and the record suggests it was made at the Larchmont Yacht Club on Long Island Sound, though that attribution rests on the style of the title and numbering rather than on a confirmed label. Late-nineteenth-century yacht clubs drew wealthy owners, crews and spectators to the waterfront for racing and social events, and the Detroit Publishing Company later sold views like this one as souvenirs of such places. The 8 x 10 inch format, a large glass plate, gave the fine detail that made these scenes popular. The negative came to the Library of Congress as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
