This three-sheet triptych shows a military maneuver at Yokohama involving French and English troops, a subject that reflects the foreign military presence in the port during the 1870s. The print is signed by Ikkaisai Yoshitoshi, a Meiji-period woodblock artist who often depicted Western subjects for a curious urban audience. In 1879 Japan was reorganizing its army along European lines, with French military advisers especially influential, so scenes of Western drill carried both novelty and political meaning. Printed in color from woodblocks, the sheets are worth studying for how the artist rendered unfamiliar uniforms, formations and foreign faces.
