This three-sheet woodcut shows a Western military drill staged in Yokohama, the treaty port where foreign soldiers, traders, and residents lived side by side with Japanese townspeople. Its title, which translates roughly as "Picture of the Grand Military Maneuver of the French and English Troops," and its publisher's imprint, Ōmeidō, date it to about 1879, early in the Meiji period. The artist, Ikkaisai Yoshitoshi, signed it and added a seal dated to the Hare year. Prints like this, often called Yokohama-e, gave Japanese audiences a close and curious look at foreign uniforms, weapons, and manners during a time of rapid change.
