Few views from this period show a Western building in Tokyo, which sets this print apart from the temples, gardens, and street scenes that dominate the series *Tōkyō meisho zue* (Sights in Tokyo). Its title, *Takanawa Igirisu kan*, identifies a British house in Takanawa, a district on the southern edge of the city where foreign diplomats were housed after the port opened in the late 1850s. The print dates to 1868, the year the Meiji government took power and Edo was renamed Tokyo, a time of rapid change in how the city looked and who lived in it. The design is credited to Hiroshige, the artist whose name appears as a signature, while Koizumi Minokichi cut the woodblocks.
