Rather than a Tokyo parade ground, this triptych is set in Yokohama, the treaty port where British and French soldiers were a visible presence in the 1870s. The three sheets show foreign troops at drill, part of the Yokohama-e tradition of prints that recorded the Western newcomers. Ikkaisai Yoshitoshi, who signed the work in brush, was by then an established artist working in a period when Japan was rapidly adopting Western military methods after the Meiji Restoration. The uniforms and formations are rendered with careful detail across all three panels.
