Few ships of the late 1890s carried the name New Orleans, so this view stands apart from the gallery's other warship images by its subject. The cruiser belonged to the American steel navy that was modernizing in the years before the Spanish-American War, when the United States was building and buying ships to project power beyond its coasts. The Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm that sold views of landscapes, cities and ships, issued this glass-plate negative, though the record gives only an approximate date of about 1898. Its catalog number and handwritten notes point to a working print series rather than a single commission, so the image is best read as a record of how the navy appeared to the public at the time.
