Canal Street in New Orleans was one of the city's broadest and busiest thoroughfares, and this view around 1907 shows the cable railway tracks that ran down its center, a reminder of how streetcars moved people through the city before electric trolleys became common. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made large numbers of views of American cities and landscapes in the early twentieth century, produced this glass-plate negative as part of its broader effort to document everyday street life. Photographs like this one capture the commercial bustle and the mix of horse-drawn and mechanized transport that defined turn-of-the-century urban America.
