This view of the cruiser U.S.S. New Orleans was made from an 8 x 10 inch glass negative, a format that gave photographers sharp detail for ship portraits. The catalog date is marked with a question mark, so it is best read as a late 1890s approximation, a period when the U.S. Navy was modernizing its fleet with steel cruisers. The ship took her name from the Louisiana port city, and in that era naval vessels named for American cities were often shown to the public at harbor calls and celebrations. The picture is part of the Detroit Publishing Company Collection, a body of photographs that documented American places and everyday life for commercial sale around the turn of the twentieth century.
