Here Washington kneels alone in prayer, a scene that presents his devotion as a private moment in the Revolution. The image draws on a story that circulated widely in the nineteenth century, in which Washington withdrew to a grove to pray during the hard winter at Valley Forge in 1777 and 1778, when the Continental Army lacked food, clothing and shelter. Currier & Ives, the New York firm that issued hand-colored lithographs for a broad public, produced many such pictures to present the nation's founder as both soldier and devout man.
