Among the many nineteenth-century images of the Revolutionary War, this hand-colored lithograph stands out for its focus on the night of December 25, 1776, when Washington led his army across the icy Delaware River to attack Hessian troops at Trenton, New Jersey. Published by Nathaniel Currier in New York sometime between 1835 and 1856, and drawn by William K. Hewitt, the print reflects the popular appetite for patriotic scenes that Currier's firm supplied to American households. The crossing was a turning point, reviving a faltering army after a run of defeats, and its dramatic retelling made it one of the most reproduced episodes of the war.
