Washington at Princeton, January 3d. 1777" shows the general in the thick of the fighting at the battle of Princeton, an American victory that followed his crossing of the Delaware and his win at Trenton about a week earlier. Nathaniel Currier published this hand-colored lithograph in New York around 1846, when his firm was turning scenes from the Revolution into inexpensive images for households across the country. Prints like this one reflect the public appetite for Washington as a national hero, and the dramatic action and bright color show how such images were meant to bring the founding story into the parlor.
