Titled simply *Washington*, this hand-colored lithograph is one of the many portraits of George Washington that Nathaniel Currier issued from his New York shop, which the record dates to between 1835 and 1856. Prints like this were made for ordinary households, where a likeness of the general who led the Continental Army and later the first president could hang beside family portraits at a modest price. By the mid-nineteenth century Washington had become a nearly sacred figure in American life, so his image was among the most reliable sellers in the trade. Because the color was applied by hand, often by workers on a production line, surviving copies vary somewhat in tint.
