The lithograph shows the tomb of George Washington at Mount Vernon, his Potomac River estate in Virginia, where he died in 1799 and where he and members of his family were laid to rest. Currier & Ives, the New York firm that printed inexpensive hand-colored views of American scenes, produced many images of Mount Vernon in the decades before the Civil War, when the house and grounds became a powerful symbol of national memory. The print's coloring and its emphasis on the quiet burial ground reflect the reverence Washington's home had come to command among Americans.
