This print shows the Marquis de Lafayette at the tomb of George Washington on the grounds of Mount Vernon, the estate on the Potomac where Washington lived and is buried. Lafayette had served under Washington as a young major general in the Continental Army, and he returned to the United States in 1824 on a long tour as a guest of the nation. His visit to Washington's resting place was among the most emotionally charged stops on that journey. The image records a meeting of two men tied to the Revolution, one of them a close friend and comrade of the other, and it reflects how Americans of the early 1800s chose to remember the war's leaders.
