Martha Washington, wife of George Washington, is the subject of this hand-colored lithograph issued by the New York firm Currier & Ives, which printed portraits of national figures for a wide popular market. The firm operated from the 1830s into the early twentieth century, and its prints were sold cheaply in shops and by subscription, bringing images of famous Americans into ordinary parlors. Martha Washington managed Mount Vernon and supported her husband through the long years of the Revolutionary War, when she joined him at winter camps. Her portrait reflects how nineteenth-century Americans came to revere the founders' families as symbols of national virtue.
