Washington's farewell to his officers at Francis's Tavern on Broad Street in New York, on December 4, 1783, is the scene this hand-colored lithograph sets out to show. Nathaniel Currier issued it around 1848, decades after the event, so it reflects how Americans of the mid-nineteenth century chose to remember the close of the Revolution. The tavern gathering, where Washington bid farewell to his senior officers, was a quiet and emotional moment after the British evacuation of the city, and the print is worth viewing as much for its nineteenth-century sentiment as for its record of the event.
