Currier's hand-colored lithograph shows the moment Washington crossed the Trenton bridge in April 1789, when local women greeted him with a welcome that the print makes into a set piece of ceremony. He was traveling from Mount Vernon to New York to take the oath as the first President of the United States, and the reception at Trenton, where he passed under a decorated arch, became one of the most repeated images of his journey. The print was issued around 1845, decades after the event, so it reflects how Americans of that era preferred to remember Washington: as a gracious national father, framed by flowers, white-clad maidens, and patriotic display.
