Ladies of Trenton, dressed in white and gathered on the bridge over the Delaware, greet Washington as he passes through in April 1789 on his way to New York for his inauguration. This hand-colored lithograph, issued by Currier & Ives around 1845, draws on a well-known episode of his journey, when local women strewed flowers before him and an arch of greenery was raised over the crossing. The record places the scene at "Trenton, N.Y.," but the town is Trenton, New Jersey. The print reflects the mid-century appetite for patriotic scenes of the nation's founding.
