The caption quotes the phrase Henry Lee used in 1799 to honor George Washington, who had died that December at Mount Vernon. Lee's words became one of the most repeated tributes to the Revolutionary leader. About fifty years later, Nathaniel Currier's New York firm issued this hand-colored lithograph, one of many inexpensive prints that turned Washington's memory into household decoration. Such pictures, sold to middle-class buyers, helped fix a standard image of the general and first president that Americans kept on their walls for generations.
