This hand-colored lithograph shows George and Martha Washington with two of Martha's grandchildren from her first marriage, the Custis children, whom the Washingtons raised after their father, Daniel Parke Custis, died in 1757. Nathaniel Currier published it in New York between 1835 and 1856, when the domestic family scene was a popular subject for American printmakers. Such prints offered middle-class buyers a patriotic image of Washington as a family man rather than only a military hero. The print's palette and detail reflect the hand-coloring that Currier's shop used to make mass-produced images more appealing.
