Rather than Washington the commander, this hand-colored lithograph turns to the Washington family, a domestic subject that suggests a more private side of the first president. Nathaniel Currier published it in New York sometime between 1835 and 1856, when his firm was building a broad market for inexpensive pictures of American history and family life. Scenes like this helped shape a popular image of Washington as a devoted husband and father, a figure of personal virtue as well as public leadership. Hand coloring, applied to each sheet, gave the print a warmth that plain black-and-white engravings lacked.
