Lithographs like this one show the moment the Continental Congress chose George Washington to lead its army, a decision made in Philadelphia on June 15, 1775, weeks after fighting had begun at Lexington and Concord. Published by Currier & Ives around 1876, the hand-colored print appeared in the centennial year, when the firm produced many scenes of the Revolution for a public eager to revisit its origins. Such prints often blended documented events with idealized staging, so the image says as much about how Americans remembered 1775 a century later as it does about the event itself.
