Currier & Ives issued this hand-colored lithograph in 1876, the centennial year of the Declaration of Independence, to show George Washington leading his troops across the icy Delaware River on the night of December 25, 1776. The title places the scene on the evening before the Battle of Trenton, a surprise attack on Hessian garrison troops that followed the crossing and helped revive the Continental cause after a run of defeats. The print belongs to a long popular tradition of Revolutionary War imagery, and its bright hand coloring reflects the firm's commercial method of reaching middle-class American homes in the late nineteenth century.
