Few American deaths were mourned as widely as George Washington's, which came at his Mount Vernon estate in Virginia on December 14, 1799, after a short illness that followed a ride in cold, wet weather. Nathaniel Currier published this lithograph in New York in 1841, more than four decades after the death, when Washington had become a fixed symbol of the Revolution. Currier, who later partnered with James Merritt Ives, produced many sentimental and patriotic images for a mass market, and prints like this one helped keep Washington's memory in ordinary homes.
