Few Revolutionary War subjects were as popular with Currier & Ives as George Washington, and this lithograph turns from the battlefield to his private life, as its title suggests. Published in New York around 1867, it belongs to a decade when the firm sold inexpensive prints to a broad middle-class public, and Washington had become a cherished national figure. The picture presents the general as a family man and country gentleman rather than a commander, a view that suited a postwar audience looking for reassuring images of the nation's founding.
