Mount Vernon, the Potomac River plantation where George Washington lived and died, is the subject here, shown in a hand-colored lithograph that Currier & Ives issued in New York sometime between 1856 and 1872. By those years the estate had become a popular pilgrimage site, largely because the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association began raising money to preserve it in 1853. Prints like this one helped fix an image of Washington's home as a place of national memory, and the color work gives the white house and surrounding grounds a tidy, idealized look worth comparing with later photographs.
