The subject is the tomb of George Washington at Mount Vernon, his Potomac River estate in Virginia, where the first president was buried after his death in 1799. The original family vault fell into disrepair, and a new tomb was built on the grounds in the early 1830s, becoming a site of pilgrimage for visitors in the decades that followed. This hand-colored lithograph was published by Currier & Ives, the New York firm that produced thousands of inexpensive prints of American landmarks, battles and heroes for a broad public eager to see the nation's history.
