Dated to November 25, 1783, the day British troops left New York City, this hand-colored lithograph shows George Washington's return to the city. Currier & Ives published it around 1857, roughly seventy years after the event, when many Americans wanted patriotic scenes of the Revolution. The print marks the end of the British occupation of New York, which had lasted most of the war, and the bright hand coloring was typical of the firm's popular output.
