The Washington Monument in the District of Columbia was still unfinished when this chromolithograph was issued, and the print shows it as a towering white obelisk rising above the surrounding landscape, as if the nation's capital were already complete. Currier & Ives, the New York firm that turned out inexpensive color prints for a broad middle-class market, published the image around 1885, when construction had stalled after the monument's design was first set in motion decades earlier and money ran short. Its appeal lay in honoring George Washington through a patriotic emblem that many Americans could hang on their walls. The print is catalogued in Currier & Ives: A catalog Raisonné, no. 4769.
