Winter in New Amsterdam shows a Dutch trading town on the tip of Manhattan, a settlement that the Dutch West India Company founded in the 1620s and that England took over in 1664, when it was renamed New York. This illustration appeared in *Collier's The National Weekly*, a popular American magazine that ran many pictorial features on the nation's past in the early twentieth century. Although the scene predates the Revolutionary War by more than a century, it reflects the cold, hard-working life of the colonial port that later shaped the city the revolutionaries knew.
